Spring Canvas

Striking red poinsettias faded from memory as we slogged through three months toward spring.

Grumbly gray skies,

spiky brown tree branches,

blanched grassy stubble on the chin of hillsides,

all elements of a dreary winter canvas threatening to dull our days.
Soon we forgot to notice these dormant surroundings.

Determined March winds began to blow strong and long.

“Enough is enough,” the winds declared as they began to sweep winter away.
“The time has come to replace the winter canvas. Be gone, blinding white snows, with your mischief, give place to the freshness of spring.”

Finally, we bid good-bye to the backside of winter.

Dots of purple crocuses bravely peek through patches of snow.
Are these spots before my eyes? Should I have my vision checked? Subtly, the spring canvas is revealed.

March winds scrub the skies with rains both hard and gentle, until brilliant blue stretches across the horizon.

Suddenly, there stands the yellow daffodils, triumphantly trumpeting their arrival.

Fringes of green nibble at the edges of yellowed grass. Robins with bright red breasts bob successfully for juicy earthworms.

Yellow forsythia join the scene like sprays of rooted fireworks bursting toward the sky.

What’s this I see with hearty flower, greening grass, and blooming forsythia? Blossoms of life zipping to the tree tops?

It’s true!
The winds and rains of March have ushered in the spring canvas!

I wonder what awesome additions April will bring?
